The skeletal system of the human body provides protection for many of the internal organs of the body. For instance, the heart and lungs are protected by the ribs and the brain is covered by the skull. The skeletal system is made up of a framework of bones, which provide a support system for the body. They give us form! The bone marrow of bones replenishes the production of blood cells.

Bones also act as storage areas for calcium and other minerals.

Bones are categorized according to their shape. There are several different shapes that they can be. Long, Short, Flat, and Irregular.

The Skeletal system works in unison with the muscular system to form the musculoskeletal system, which creates a system of levers to allow movement in the human body. Muscle attach to the bones at both ends to accomplish movement. Of course, the movement of the skeletal muscles is dependent upon interaction with another system of the body, the control center, the Nervous System.
